Cold and Snowy

Pumpkins at Community Farm of Ann Arbor

When I tell people what I do (namely, run Harvest Kitchen) they are often surprised that we can cook with local food year-round here in Michigan.  That’s part of why I keep this blog–to help fill in a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes here at Harvest Kitchen and how we manage to pull off miracles like having local food all winter!  Last week I wrote a bit about what’s happening at some of the farms we source from.  This week Farmer Lizzie of Tantre has sent another lyrical picture of life on the farm in the winter, so I thought I’d share it with you.  This little paragraph came along with the list of veggies available from Tantre this week. Lizzie writes,

These winds are forcing all the barns around to slant, and the sunflower stalks have bent their backs all afternoon. Luckily, much of the produce we offer at this time of year is safe in the sleeping shed, crated and stacked and waiting. Although we have nothing new to offer at this moment, our squash have cured their way into patient sweetness, and we still have many varieties to offer.

We’ll be taking advantage of those delicious winter squash in this week’s pumpkin soup.  We’ve ordered a tasty variety known as kabocha, a Japanese pumpkin that stores well.  We hope you enjoy!
